Monsoon Services and ProgramsMonsoon United Asian Women of Iowa conducted community assessments that began in January 2008. The objective of the assessment is to assess the needs and assets of the Asian communities in Iowa in order to create effective and sustainable community-rooted programs.Monsoon utilized two methods --- focus group discussion and photovoice. In March, a focus group discussion composed of all-Asian female participants was conducted and an all-Asian male focus group discussion occurred in April. In order to include the youth in the assessment, Monsoon used photovoice. Nine Asian students from Hiatt Middle School participated in the project for the whole month of May. Two programs were established as the outcome of the assessments --- Multi-lingual Advocates Program (learn more) and the Generation One: Youth Advisory Council (learn more). Monsoon plans to continue the community assessment until the end of 2008 and will include Women’s Oral History in the project. Asian Women and Violence in Iowa Iowa Attorney General’s Crimes Victims Assistance Division FY 2008 Statistics: - 199 Asian women and 39 Hawaiian/ Pacific Islanders were served by domestic violence and sexual assault providers across Iowa. - API women are least likely to report physical victimization.
