Direct Services

Monsoon provide direct services to survivors/victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

SURVIVOR'S ADVOCACY: MULTI-LINGUAL ADVOCATES PROGRAM

Multi-lingual Advocates Program is an inspired application of the San Francisco Asian Women’s (SF AWS) Shelter Multilingual Access Model (MLAM).

The model was developed by the SF AWS as a response to the needs of the non-English speaking battered women and their children. The MLAM has been widely-use by different organizations working with Asian communities across the United States, for example DVRP in Washington, DC.

MLAM was introduced to Monsoon in 2004 as one of the SF AWS’s technical assistance recipient. Due to the lack of funding and a full-time staff, Monsoon could not implement the program. Today, Monsoon is federally and state funded and has one full-time staff hence have the capacity to finally implement a program that will enhance services provided by mainstream shelters and crisis centers across Iowa. The need for advocates who can speak the language and culturally competent is one of the issues discussed in the focus group discussions.

Monsoon will recruit bilingual/multilingual community members as advocates. These advocates will be provided with a 50+ hours introductory training about domestic violence and sexual assault and additional ongoing trainings, support and supervision will be offered in the future. The advocates are paid $15/hour and will work together with the staff and clients as a team, depending on the language needs. The program ensures linguistic and culturally competent support and advocacy for clients. The program also provides training and job opportunities for bilingual community members, and expands education about domestic violence and sexual assault throughout the many communities that the language advocates represent.

Join us in our commitment for a better community by joining Monsoon as a paid Multi-Lingual Advocate!
