API & African Youth Summit 2015
It’s that time again! Monsoon is hosting the 2015 API and African Youth Summit. The summit will be held on May 8th, Friday from 8:30am to 1:30pm at Grand View University. The year’s theme this year is “Healing Ourselves, Healing Our Community.” We are excited to have Roopa Singh of SAAPYA (South Asian American Perspectives on Yoga and Art) as our keynote speaker and who will lead the workshops. Roopa Singh is an attorney and yoga teacher who has done graduate degrees at UC Berkeley and NYU, for law and cinema studies. She founded SAAPYA (South Asian American Perspectives on Yoga and Art), an emerging and influential platform on the personal and political implications of yoga, with a focus on healing from the personal and political implications of sexual violence, including principles such as: body sovereignty, black and brown solidarity, and narrative visibility. Roopa has worked towards reproductive justice and the wellness of women and girls of color for over a decade. She facilitates workshops on best practices in yoga for survivors with NAPIESV and SCESA, national organizations devoted to healing sexual violence within communities of color. She will be joined by DJ Vex! If you are know of any youth who might be interested in attending the summit, contact Cody Soulinthavong at firstname.lastname@example.org.
